Champions of Italy: Gigi Buffon

Gigi Buffon enjoyed another strong campaign as the Bianconeri’s number one, confirming his title of the goalkeeper of the 21st century, as named by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics in February 2012.

The 2011/12 season saw the World Cup winner make 35 appearances and play 3,329 minutes, conceding just 16 goals along the way. His disciplinary record was also impeccable.

Along with his superb performances, the shot stopper went 568 minutes without conceding a single goal, from Di Vaio’s strike in Bologna to Mauri’s header for Lazio at Juventus Stadium.

If Gigi was asked to pick his best save of the season, he would probably choose the stop he made from Boateng’s effort in Juve’s 2-0 championship win over Milan.

Aside from his efforts between the posts, there is also another statistic worth analysing: 76.9% pass completion. This provides further proof of Buffon’s ability as an all-round footballer as well as illustrating the integral role he plays in the possession based game championed by Antonio Conte.
